Famous label run from the Belfast record shop of Terri Hooley that released
important singles by the cream of Northern Irish punk bands including Rudi,
Victim, The Outcasts and
The Undertones.
The label was extremely active during
it's first couple of years, releasing 18 records in 1978-79 not counting
represses or reissues, but by 1980 the releases were drying up, not because
of a lack of local
talent but because of financal problems. Several singles were
cancelled, the "Ulster On A Thin Wire" sampler LP was cancelled, and apart from a
number of projects that had already been ready to go or had external funding the
label was quiet during 1980-81. The Strong Records sub label released three
singles in 1981.
Good Vibrations relaunched in 1982 with singles from Cruella De Ville and
the Bank Robbers but this revival was short-lived and a
planned single by Family Of Noise
was cancelled. A pair of singles emerged in 1983 to tie in with the
Belfast Special edition of Channel 4's The Tube but these was the last releases
until the end of the decade. The Fat Lady Sings
single released on Good
Vibrations in 1986 was done with Terri Hooley's blessing but was in fact
released by the band themselves.
The label was revived again in 1990-91, a similar story to Posh Boy in the US.
Reissues (or leftover originals) became available and a batch of new releases by
several new bands were released. Some of these had connections to earlier groups
and as such appear on this site, but some do not. The fortunes of the label
waned again until circa 2000 when a number of punk CDs appeared.
The Good Vibrations record shop and label were dormant for many years until 2007
when both were reactivated, the latter with new releases by The Minnows.
Discography:
The main series was the GOT series for 7" singles and the BIG series for LP
releases. A separate series was launched for bands from outside Northern
Ireland, the Good Vibrations International series (GVI) though this division
wasn't adhered to strictly with Englis bands The Shapes and the Tee Vees appearing
in the main series.
Catalogue numbers were assigned to projects which were subsequently cancelled
and in many cases these unused numbers were re-assigned in later years. For
this reason the catalogue does not follow strict chronological order. A
