Bio:
Pop duo from Bray who recorded a single in 1965 while both were still students,
Rosemary (aged 21) studying art at Trinity College and Howard (aged 22) studying geography &
economics in the same place.
The single was the first release on Tony Boland's Tempo Records label.
It was produced by John Paul Jones, later of Led Zeppelin fame. Rosemary & Howard
only appear on the A-side, performing a Del Shannon cover, in typical sixties orchestrated pop song
style. It's nothing special.
The B-side is credited to The John Paul Jones Orchestra and is titled
"Sound City". It's a jam recorded at the Sound City Club in Dublin by
various musicians, reputedly including Jimmy Page (though this seems highly unlikely),
and was used as the soundtrack to a short promo film featuring The Kingbees
called Sound City Beat. Also released on Jerden (#761) in the USA.
Howard Kinlay reputedly backed Marianne Faithful while on tour in Ireland in 1964.
Does anyone know more details?
Howard Kinlay became much better known as a journalist and activist. He was a prominent
student activist in the 60s and became the first elected
student representative at Trinity College in 1964. He later served two terms as president of the
Union of Students in Ireland (USI) and co-founded USIT, the student travel organisation,
serving as its director and chairman.
After graduation he worked as a journalist and broadcaster
with RTE, Alternative Radio Dublin (during the apogee of the pirate radio scene in Ireland in the 1970s)
and the Irish Times amongst others. He died in 1987 at the early age of 44. A commemorative plaque
was unveiled in his honour at Kinlay House, the student hostel named after him in Dublin, ten years
after his passing.
But whatever happened to Rosemary McMillan?
